In this tutorial , you’ll learn how to use Cali Terpenes terpenes in dry extracts, such as dry CBD hash or other cannabinoids.
Dry extracts are characterized by being a solvent-free extraction method. It involves separating trichome glands from the plant material. Afterward, these trichomes are filtered from the remaining plant material, resulting in a cannabis concentrate.
This extraction method is known by various names or nicknames depending on the region, type of finish, or quality of the extract. You might have heard of terms like traditional hash, pollen, dry sift, dry hash, or many others. They are known for having a sandy texture or being more moldable depending on their ratio of cannabinoids, terpenes, and plant material.
During dry extracts, some of the aroma (terpenes) is lost. Sometimes you can preserve more aroma, but unfortunately, in other cases, too many terpenes are lost, resulting in an extract with poor in smell, taste, and effect.
Below, you can discover how to add terpenes to dry hash. Check out our tutorial video at the end of this post to fully understand it.
How to Add Terpenes to Dry CBD Extracts
Here’s everything you need to give your CBD concentrate a better and more intense aroma.
Materials needed
- Dry CBD extract (in this case, we’ll use a non-psychoactive cannabinoid extraction, but this method works for all dry extracts)
- Cali Terpenes’ terpenes
- Vinyl, nitrile, or similar gloves.
- Spatula or dabber.
- Airtight container.
- Plastic or parchment paper.
Application method
- Crush and evenly distribute your dry extract using a spatula or dabber for better terpene distribution.
- Apply between 0.5% and 4% of terpenes directly to the extract (maximum 1 drop per 1g).
- Mix the terpenes well with the extract to ensure even distribution.
- (Optional) Press the extract inside food-grade plastic or parchment paper, to make it compact and distribute terpenes better.
- Store the extract in an airtight container for at least 24 hours, preferably in a cold environment (around 7°C, in the fridge), to integrate the terpenes.
*The amount of terpenes to use in dry extracts may vary based on:
- Aromatic intensity of the material to be scented. Material with no aroma won’t need the same amount of terpenes as one with a slight or bad aroma.
- The amount of aroma needed (conduct tests with small amounts, see recommendations section).
- The chosen terpene profile; even though all are pure, they don’t all provide the same aromatic intensity depending on the cannabis strain’s terpene profile composition.
Recommended terpene proportions for extractions
As mentioned earlier, the terpene quantity for extracts is approximately between 0.5% and 4%, with a typical maximum of 3%. It’s better to start by adding less and increasing as needed.
For instance, if you had to scent 100g:
1ml of terpenes represents approximately 1%, 2ml represents 2%, and 3ml represents 3%.
If you had to scent 10g:
0.1ml of terpenes would represent around 1%, 0.2ml represents 2%, and 0.3ml represents 3%.
Or if it were just 1g:
Considering that 0.025ml is 1 drop, adding 1 drop would represent 2.5% of terpenes. If you only wanted to add 1% of terpenes, you’d need 2.5g of material and 1 drop of terpenes.
Recommendations
- Apply a maximum of 1 drop of terpenes per 1g of material; ideally, tests should be conducted with smaller amounts, such as 1 drop per 2g, 1 drop per 3g, before using larger quantities. This way, the ideal ratio can be found without wasting product unnecessarily.
- Thoroughly mix the terpenes into the extraction and store it in airtight, cold conditions.
- Respect the resting time for better integration of the terpenes (minimum 24h).

Other more industrialized/professional methods
- Terpene spraying using industrial machinery (food flavor sprayers, etc.).
- If the extract is powdered, the fastest and most efficient method to apply terpenes is to spray them using Terps Spray.
Changes in the extract
- Increased aromatic intensity with the aromatic profile of the desired strain (Girl Scout Cookies, Tangie, 24K Gold, etc.).
- More lively and moldable texture.
- Greater synergy with cannabinoids (entourage effect).
