How to Add Terpenes to Jelly CBD

Did you know that terpenes make up the aroma produced by cannabis and other flowers, plants and fruits? As a consequence, their extracts also contain terpenes, although sadly in most cases they end up lost during the process. Today we'll teach you how to add this aroma back.

Do your extracts end up with little aroma and flavor? Sometimes, during drying, curing or extracting processes, terpenes can be lost, which usually ends up in a less aromatic result.

Cannabis terpene profiles are ideal for adding aromas to all types of cannabis extracts and concentrates, as well as improving their texture and entourage effect.

Today we’re going to look at how to add “jelly” type terpene concentrates with different textures depending on their composition. Jelly hash comes from a combination of different types of and qualities of extracts and concentrates, which usually includes: dry extracts + cannabis concentrates (instead of cannabis it can be done with plant mass but it reduces quality). Therefore, jelly hash can be a combination of a dry extracts + rosin*, and also a combinacion of a dry extract + BHO**.

*Cannabis concentrate made using pressure, heat and mesh covers to filter impurities (non-solvent concentrate).

**Concentrate made using pressure and solvent gas (isobutane, therefore it is a solvent concentrate).

How to Add Terpenes to a Jelly CBD Extract (cannabidiol)

Applying terpenes to hash is quite easy, although you need to pay special attention to the amount of terpenes used, the balance of the mixture and processing times. Remember to check our tutorial video at the end of the post.

Items Needed

  • Jelly CBD extract (in this case, we’re using CBD but there are other cannabinoids).
  • Cali Terpenes (cannabis aromas).
  • Sterile gloves (no aromas).
  • Airtight jar.
  • Food-grade plastic or oven parchment.

How to Use

  1. Mold the extract to make it easier to spread the terpenes.
  2. Apply between 0.5 to 4% of terpenes* straight to your extract (max. recommended 1 drop per 1 gram).
  3. Mix the terpenes with the extract to guarantee a balanced aroma.
  4. Store your extract in an airtight container during at least 24h, preferable in a cold area (7 degrees in the fridge) so that the terpenes can soak in properly.

*The proportion of terpenes used in each type of extract or cannabis concentrate can vary depending on:

  • The aroma and flavor of the extract before aromatizing. A material with no aroma won’t need as many terpenes as one with a decent aroma or a bad aroma.
  • The intensity of the aroma added to each type of concentrate or extract (we recommend testing with small amounts, see how in the “recommendation” part of this post).
  • The terpenes used – all of them are pure but not all of them have the same aromatic intensity.

Recommended Terpene Proportions for Extracts

As we were saying earlier, the range of terpenes used in cannabis concentrates and extracts should be between 0.5 and 4% terpenes, generally using 3% as a maximum. Therefore, supposing that you want to aromatize 100g, you could use:

  • 1ml terpenes represents 15%, 2ml is 2%, 3ml is 3% and so on.

For aromatizing just 10g:

  • 0.1ml of terpenes would be 1%, 0.2ml is 2% and 0.3ml is 3%.

If you want to aromatize only 1 gram:

  • Keeping in mind that 1 drop is 0.025ml, 1 drop would be around 2.5% terpenes in this case. If you want to add 1%, you need 2.5g material and 1 drop of terpenes.

Cannabis terpene profiles enrich the aroma and flavor of cannabis extracts such as Jelly Hash CBD, including texture and entourage effect.

Recommendations

  1. Maximum 1 drop of terpenes per 1 gram – it’s a good idea to test with smaller amounts; 1 drop per 2g, 1 drop per 3g etc. before you move on to larger amounts. This allows you to find the perfect proportion for your material without any extra waste.
  2. Mix the extract and the terpenes well and keep in a cold area, in an airtight container.
  3. Make sure to allow for a minimum of 24h for the terpenes to settle properly.
  4. Check out our post terpenes and hash to find out more secrets.

Other Industrial/Professional Methods

  1. Spraying terpenes using industrial machinery (aroma spritzers etc).
  2. Spraying with terpenes using Terps Spray.

Changes in the Extract

  1. More intense flavors and aromas using whichever strain you want (AK 47, Amnesia, Gorilla Glue etc.)
  2. More texture, moldable in many cases.
  3. More synergy with cannabinoids (entourage effect).
