Have you ever tried Rosin extracts? This cannabis concentrate made without solvents has grown exponentially in popularity over the last few years due to its speed, easeand quality when it comes to other extraction methods.
This process is based on separating the active components in cannabis (cannabinoids, terpenes etc.) from the green material itself via pressure and heat. In order to do so, buds or an extract such as kief or ice water hash are placed in specific filters so that, when pressed using a specific pressure and temperature, they separate from the material itself.
Depending on the duration, temperatures, filters, and materials used, different finishes or separations can be obtained, such as flower rosin, ice rosin THCA, diamonds, salsa etc.
However, sometimes due to duration, material quality used to make the rosin, temperature or other factors, rosin can lose some of its aroma and flavor, as well as reducing its entourage effect considerably. What can be done? Cannabis terpene profiles are used to recover or add aromatic potency to all types of extracts and cannabis concentrates.
Today, we0ll explain step by step how to use terpenes with rosin for spectacular results. We also have a clear and concise tutorial video at the end of the post.
How to Add Terpenes to Rosin
In order to use terpenes with rosin you don’t need much material or prep, although we do recommend having at least 1g of material, as the maximum proportion of terpenes is 1 drop (0.025ml) per gram.
If you have a micro-dropper you can aromatize less than 1g.
Things You’ll Need
- Rosin extract (rosintech)
- Cali Terpenes, in this occasion we’ve used the strain Gorilla Glue.
- Sterile gloves, no aroma.
- Spatula or dabber.
- Airtight container or silicone box.
How to Apply
- One the rosin is done, apply between 0.5 and 4% of terpenes directed into the rosin (max 1 drop per 1g = 0.025ml terpenes x 1g rosin).
- Mix the terpenes with the extract well using a spatula or dabber to guarantee and even spread.
- Store your rosin in an airtight container for at least 24h, preferably in a fridge (at around 7°C) to make sure the terpenes are properly absorbed.
*The amount of terpenes used in Rosin may vary depending on:
- The aroma and flavor of the extract before aromatizing. A material with no aroma won’t need as many terpenes as one with a decent aroma or a bad aroma.
- The intensity of the aroma that is needed for the rosin (we recommend testing with small amounts, see how in the “recommendations” part of this post).
- The terpene profile chosen – all of them are pure but not all of them have the same aromatic intensity.
Recommended Terpene Proportions for Extracts
As we were saying earlier, the range of terpenes used in cannabis concentrates and extracts should be between 0.5 and 4% terpenes, with 3% as the general maximum used. It’s better to start with small amounts and add more if needed.
So, assuming you want to add aroma to 100g:
- 1ml terpenes represents 1%, 2ml is 2%, 3ml is 3% and so on.
For aromatizing 10g:
- 0.1ml of terpenes would be 1%, 0.2ml is 2% and 0.3ml is 3%.
For just 1 gram:
- Keeping in mind that 1 drop is 0.025ml, 1 drop would be around 2.5% terpenes in this case. If you want to add 1%, you need 2.5g material and 1 drop of terpenes.
On the left, rosin without added terpenes. On the right, rosin with terpenes.
Recommendations
- Maximum 1 drop of terpenes per 1 gram – it’s a good idea to test with smaller amounts; 1 drop per 2g, 1 drop per 3g etc. before you move on to larger amounts. This allows you to find the perfect proportion for your material without any extra waste.
- Mix the extract and the terpenes well and keep in a cold area, in an airtight container.
- Make sure to allow for a minimum of 24h for the terpenes to settle properly.
- Check out our terpenes and hash post to find out more about extracts and terpenes.
Change in the Extract
- More intense flavor and aroma of your preferred strain: Amnesia, Tangie, Blackberry Kush…
- Viscous, intense texture and a slight color change.
- The extract is easier to vape in specific vapes for concentrates and waxes.
- Better synergy (entourage effect).
