Smoking VS Vaping – Which is Healthier?

Which is better, smoking or vaping? We know the answer and we want you to know it too. That's why we're going into detail in this post surrounding the main differences between both methods; their compounds and individual risks, as well as how to vape properly.

You’ve likely heard that smoking is bad, but do you know whether it’s better to smoke or vape? In this post, we’ll unveil this and many other vaping-related questions.

What Health Risks does Smoking Pose?

Combustion is a rapid chemical process of oxidation accompanied by the release of energy in the form of heat and light. When you smoke a cigarette, temperatures of up to 600º can be reached at the tip while inhaling.

This high temperature allows for the combustion of tobacco and residues of the substances added to it. In the exhaled smoke, various substances can be identified, including:

  • Hydrogen cyanide
  • Tar
  • Nicotine
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Tobacco-specific nitrosamines
  • Aromatic amines
  • Nitrogen oxide
  • Ammonia
  • Benzopyrenes
  • Traces of lead, selenium, arsenic, chromium, acroleins, and formaldehydes, among other substances.
toxic substances tobacco
Tobacco contains around 200 toxic substances and 40 carcinogens.

Many of these substances are carcinogenic, and others are toxic at certain doses. Additionally, the quality of the paper and filters used also plays a role; in both cases, depending on the manufacturer they may or may not contain harmful substances, especially in the case of paper.

Information about the harmful effects of smoking is accessible to everyone, and the health effects of this bad habit are well-known. That’s why legal regulations have been implemented in recent years to try and reduce tobacco consumption.

Addiction to nicotine and other potentially addictive substances in tobacco poses a challenging problem. It can seriously jeopardize the health of smokers and, in many cases, passive smokers.

I Want to Quit Smoking, What Options do I have?

We know it’s not easy, but if you genuinely want to reduce the risks of smoking, your options are limited:

  • The best thing smokers can do for their health is to quit smoking for good.
  • There is substantial evidence indicating that vaping products have much less risk associated with them than smoking cigarettes (around 95% less).
  • There are support services can assist smokers using vaping products to quit smoking definitively.
  • There is a crucial factor when quitting smoking; contrary to what many think, to completely break the habit of smoking, you don’t need nicotine.

Vaping, Better Than Smoking?

Is vaping e-liquids better for you than smoking cigarettes? Without a doubt, the answer is YES, although it’s not a 100% harmless substance, it reduces the risks associated with smoking by about 95%.

When vaping e-liquids, there’s no combustion, so no smoke is produced, only vapor. The principle of vaping e-liquids is simple; the coil heats the wick soaked in e-liquid, generating vapor that is inhaled and then exhaled.

However, we do NOT recommend sub-ohm vaping, vaping using weak coils or, alternatively, strong couls (high wattages). If you are looking to enjoy the flavor and aroma of e-liquids while reducing potential risks, we recommend following a series of guidelines that we’ve presented below to minimize risks.

Our vaping philosophy is clear: use coils of between 1 to 2 ohms and wattages of around 15-30W, among other guidelines. This allows for the following:

  • Reducing the possibility of the coil reaching elevated temperatures quickly, ensuring an optimal vaping temperature at which the generation of by-products is minimal.
  • Enjoying more intense and pleasant flavors and aromas.
  • Vaping in the healthiest way possible, avoiding coughs generated by high temperatures or toxic by-products.

What can I do to Vape Properly?

In addition to the strong coil, low-power vaping we mentioned earlier, there are some vaping tips that align with our philosophy:

  1. Maintenance of vaping equipment. It’s essential to keep your vaping parts well-maintained; otherwise, you may encounter unpleasant experiences.
  2. Changing out the coil on time can prevent residue accumulation, leading to more advanced deterioration.
  3. The wick in the coil has a limited lifespan and cannot be extended indefinitely.
  4. If the wick burns due to a lack of e-liquid, you’ll quickly notice the taste. We recommend periodic wick or pod replacements. To prevent the wick from burning, do not use the vape until 2-3 minutes after filling it, and always keep at least the minimum liquid level in the tank.
  5. Periodically clean the tank with warm water or propylene glycol and thoroughly dry before use.
  6. Quality of the e-liquid. Obviously, if you use a quality vaping liquid, the potential risks will be lower.
  7. We do not recommend vaping e-liquids with more than 20% glycerin, as the few risks associated with vaping are directly related to excess consumption of vegetable glycerin. An excess of vegetable glycerin can cause lipid pneumonia; the first diagnosed case had consumed around 50ml of e-liquid with a high glycerin content in 24 hours. Additionally, a high percentage of glycerin can impact the taste of the e-liquid.

Are there Different Qualities of e-Liquids?

As with any product, there are differences, sometimes small and sometimes very significant. The main differences in quality lie in the components used, formulation, as well as quality, hygiene, and safety controls.

From the perspective of the Cali Terpenes team, an e-liquid should facilitate risk prevention in vaping, which means that:

  • Cali Terpene e-liquids with terpenes do not contain nicotine, only pure terpenes.
  • The formulation of our e-liquids is based on Propylene Glycol and a small amount of Vegetable Glycerin.
  • They do not contain flavors like “donut,” “cake,” or similar flavors, but rather terpene profiles that also have their own effects and benefits from an aromatherapy standpoint.
  • They don’t contain added sweeteners and do not include other toxic substances found in some e-liquids on the market, ensuring product quality and control.
  • Additionally, their formulation has the lowest content of vegetable glycerin on the market, reducing potential risks associated with vaping.
  • Their formulation allows consumers to enjoy the intense flavor and aroma of some of the best cannabis strains.
  • They are packaged under strict quality and hygiene controls to guarantee maximum product safety.
