What is CBD or Cannabidiol?
CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the main cannabinoids or chemical compounds that naturally occur in cannabis or hemp. It is extracted from the plant’s flowers, and only certain strains are rich in CBD (most of the flowers commonly used have a high concentration of THC, which is the best-known psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis).
Unlike THC, CBD doesn’t produce a psychoactive effect (meaning it doesn’t “get you high”), but it stimulates the body’s natural response to pain, anxiety, and stress, as shown by several global studies.
There are also studies that recognize CBD’s ability to counteract the adverse effects of THC, such as paranoia or short-term memory loss. Like other cannabinoids, CBD interacts with our body through the receptors of the endocannabinoid system.
CBD and the Endocannabinoid System
The endocannabinoid system is responsible for maintaining various regulatory tasks of metabolic processes in the human body. It consists of a group of receptors found in cells, which allow cannabinoids to interact with our body.
The endocannabinoid system is composed of CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors and endocannabinoids (produced by our own bodies). This system is essential in maintaining “homeostasis,” i.e., our body’s balance and proper functioning.
Not only is the endocannabinoid system found in humans, but also in other mammals, amphibians, birds, and many other animals.
What are the Uses of CBD?
Extensive scientific research and the increasing accounts from patients and physicians highlight CBD’s potential as treatment assistance for a wide variety of diseases and conditions:
- Stress, anxiety, and depression.
- Inflammation and pain.
- Insomnia
- Intestinal inflammation
- Smoking and other addictions.
- Dermatitis, atopic skin, acne.
- Post-workout recovery
- Migraine
- Neurological disorders
- Autoimmune diseases
- Menstrual pain
- Hypertension
It is very important to mention that, while CBD can be beneficial, it’s never advisable to use it as a replacement for your medication without consulting your doctor, so we always recommend speaking with your doctor or veterinarian (in the case of pets) before starting any type of change.
How Can CBD Be Used?
Despite CBD’s significant potential for the treatment of certain diseases, there still haven’t been enough clinical trials for the entire medical community to consider it a useful medicine. In the meantime, depending on the country, you can find it on the market in a variety of formats. In Germany, for instance, you can buy it in pharmacies even in flower format.
